Modern military combat is more popular nowadays compared to historical shooters and the over-saturation of futuristic shooters. Though it’s important to note that time period is not going to be the inherent savior of the Battlefield franchise. Most fans would likely argue that World War 2 was not the breaking point for Battlefield 5 , but the severe balancing issues and the content delays were more detrimental. Pair this with the extremely ambitious content plan that was more ironed out than the gameplay itself, and Battlefield 5 ‘s slow and unfortunate passing was sad to see . Battlefield 6 needs to nail down the basics before deciding how to make the game bigger, regardless of whether or not the game is set during 1942 or 2
Call of Duty will have much more momentum than Battlefield does going into 2021, mostly thanks to Warzone ‘s surprising success (and Firestorm ‘s failure). Call of Duty is at a peak of players and and success, but Black Ops Cold War will have to top the previous game if Activision wants to stay on top. Trailers and closed betas are making players excited for Black Ops Cold War , and EA has yet to do anything to revive the hype for a new Battlefield game. Will EA be able to bring back the age-old debate of Call of Duty vs Battlefie
DICE might have another Battlefield game in the works alongside Battlefield 6 . According to a September rumor, a remake of Battlefield 3 , one of the most popular installments in the series, could be in development. The source of the leak is the Stockholm studio itself. On Twitter, DICE posted a short clip from the game followed by a “What?” question, which could either indicate a Battlefield 3 remaster or subtly confirm the modern setting for Battlefield 6 . Regardless, nothing else has been shared in regards to that since the initial September publicat
Staying in the past would likely be a death sentence for Battlefi e ld 6 . Ultimately, that leaves two possibilities: the present and the future. But a future setting may be just as unappealing as another game set in the past. Call of Duty, still seemingly the arbiter for what’s “in” in the games industry just did that with Black Ops 4 . With Treyarch reportedly taking the lead for the next Call of Duty game, there’s a good chance that Black Ops 5 may be the next entry in the franchise , which may mean yet another Call of Duty set in the fut
Battlefield may have a hard time keeping up because of Call of Duty ‘s flexibility. Call of Duty: WW2 and Infinite Warfare are two different kinds of games, even though they’re both under the Call of Duty series. Battlefield can only change their style a little, and has to keep to realistic combat. Players like Battlefield for its detail and realism , meaning if EA goes away from that, there is a chance it could be just another total failure of a game. Nonetheless, going for possibly a more futuristic style of gameplay or something the FPS community hasn’t seen before could be what Battlefield needs to stay popu
That being said, returning the Battlefield series to a modern setting doesn’t come without its challenges. Specifically because of the other franchises mentioned above, Call of Duty . Not only would over-saturation of modern shooters be a problem, but the Call of Duty franchise has encroached closer to what used to make Battlefield distinctly different from it. With game modes like Ground War and the Warzone battle royale, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has also tackled big team battle modes to fans’ praise. Ground War in a lot of ways emulates Battlefield ‘s Conquest mode , and has been pretty widely enjoyed by fans as w
EA Play’s last few moments, Full Record at least before the announcement of Skate ‘s return, did show off some prototype gameplay of what appeared to be a Battlefield game. It’s unclear if it was specifically Battlefield 6 , as it showed what looked like World War II soldiers running across an untextured plane. This was likely a re-use of assets in a new/repurposed development environment, so it’s not indicative of a World War II setting or the final product by any means. That being said, Battlefield 6 will certainly need to live up to the expectations Miele is setting for fans. It’s been too long since a proper Battlefield game has had its time in the spotlight, but what she’s inferring may be enough to reinvent the franchise after Battlefield 5 ‘s poor rele
That being said, taking that prototype gameplay at face value, it’s clear that EA is inferring these new improvements in player density/fidelity and destruction refinements will be Battlefield ‘s key factors of success for next-gen . That’s certainly not a bad thing, as having large-scale battlefields that evoke a simulation of war is exactly what Battlefield has done best in the past. The only major problem is that Battlefield 6 will need to make sure that these new additions are not just window dressing. These systemic improvements/refinements have to be done with purpose, not just for the sake of being technically impressive without any semblance of gameplay importa
